Ford Steps Into the Future with 2021 Fully Autonomous Car

Ford is stepping into the future by targeting a fully autonomous vehicle for ride-sharing in 2021. Drivers need not apply.

After recently investing in new tech companies and doubling their Silicon Valley team, the automotive powerhouse made the announcement in Palo Alto:

“The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago,” said Ford president and CEO, Mark Fields. “We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles.”

Ford’s first fully autonomous car will be a Society of Automotive Engineers-defined level 4-capable vehicle. This means it will operate without a steering wheel, gas or brake pedal and be used for things like ride sharing and ride-hailing within geo-fenced areas.
